THE LARGE INTESTINE

We've reached the last location our food travels through in our body before leaving it completely out the anus.

Undigested food from the small intestine makes its way to the large intestine. By this time, the body has absorbed almost all the nutrients it needs from the food. The main function of the large intestine is to remove water from what has not been digested so it can be excreted from the body.

There are three main parts to the large intestine:
1. The Cecum- The pouch at the beginning of the large intestine that takes the undigested matter from the small intestine.
2. The Colon- The colon has three parts to it as well. They are the ascending colon, the transverse colon, and the descending colon. Bacteria in the colon is used to help digest any remaining food products.
3. The Rectum- Where waste is stored before it leaves the body.
