THE ESOPHAGUS

After leaving the throat, we have now entered a muscular tube known as the esophagus. In the esophagus muscle contractions force the food down to the stomach. We call these contractions peristalsis. The sphincter is located at the end of the esophagus. It acts as a valve that opens to let food into the stomach, and closes so food cannot leave the stomach and go back into the esophagus.
